Cartersville is the official seat of Bartow County and it is located 44 miles northwest of Atlanta on Interstate 75. Because Cartersville is also situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 411, U.S. Highway 41, Georgia Highway 113, Georgia Highway 61, Georgia Highway 293 and Georgia Highway 20, it is a regional hub of commercial, cultural and recreational activity. According to data from the U.S. Census in 2000, Cartersville’s population was 15,925, the city’s total land area is 23.4 square miles, the median income for a household in the city was $41,162, and the median income for a family was $48,219. In July of 2007, the population was estimated to have increased to 19,610. Cartersville has a relatively low population density with only 838 people per square mile, it has a low cost of living index at 90.8% of the national average, and it includes the zip codes 30120 and 30121.

Historic places in Carterville

The most extensive evidence of prehistoric Mississippian culture in the Southeastern United States can be seen at the Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site in Cartersville. This 54 acre Georgia State Park contains three large earthen mounds, the village area and the plaza that were constructed during the Paleo-Indian Period around 10,000 B.C. Cartersville has thirteen properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places including two historic courthouses, the Friendship Monument, and the first outdoor painted wall advertisement for Coca-Cola dating from 1894.

In 2000, the median house/condominium value was $106,600 according to the U.S. Census. By 2007, it had risen to $178,400 according to data from the real estate multiple listing service. That figure represents a 67% appreciation in property values over a seven year period and it indicates the strength of Cartersville’s residential real estate market.
